19 Nov How to remove red wine from your carpet and (what not to do)
The holiday season is almost here, the weather’s warming up, the social calendars are filling fast, and gatherings are just around the corner.
With friends and family getting ready for celebrations, there’s plenty of laughter, good food, and of course, a few well-deserved glasses of red wine. But amid all the fun, accidents happen, and few things make your heart drop faster than watching a glass tip over and red wine splash across your beautiful carpet or rug.
At Devine Carpet Care, we know this scenario all too well. Whether it’s a Christmas catch-up, a work party, or a casual summer barbecue, spills happen, and knowing what to do in those first few moments can save your carpet (and your sanity).
Why is red wine so hard to remove?
Red wine isn’t just “red water.” It’s a mix of natural pigments, acids, and tannins, all of which love to bond with carpet fibres.
The deep crimson colour comes from anthocyanins, plant compounds that cling tightly to fabric and are especially stubborn on wool carpets and natural fibres.
Add warmth, time, and the porous nature of carpet fibres, and you’ve got a stain that can quickly become permanent if treated incorrectly.
That’s why red wine stains are a top call-out for our carpet cleaning Sydney team, especially during the festive season.

The Holiday Season = The Season of Spills
Between Christmas parties, New Year’s Eve gatherings, and casual summer barbecues, this time of year brings more food, more fun, and more accidents.
With glasses being clinked and carpets underfoot, it’s no wonder we see a spike in emergency callouts for carpet stain removal during December and January.
If you’re hosting or attending events this holiday season, here’s a bit of reassurance: accidents happen to everyone. Even the most careful guest can slip up. What matters is how you respond in those first few moments.
What not to do
Let’s start with the don’ts, because doing the wrong thing can turn a temporary mark into a permanent stain.
❌ Don’t reach for the bicarb soda
We know it’s an old household trick, but never use bicarb soda on wool carpet. The alkaline nature of bicarb can react with the natural fibres and cause bleaching or rough texture patches that can’t be repaired.
❌ Don’t rub or scrub
Rubbing pushes the wine deeper into the carpet pile, spreading the stain and damaging the fibres. Instead, always blot gently.
❌ Don’t soak the area
A little moisture is fine, but too much water, even soda water, can soak through to the underlay, leading to odours or mould. Use small amounts only if you know what you’re doing, and call a professional as soon as possible.
❌ Don’t use household cleaning sprays
Many sprays contain dyes or chemicals that can permanently alter the colour of your carpet. A professional stain removal expert will always test the pH and fibre type before using any cleaning solution.

The Devine difference
At Devine Carpet Care, we know that every carpet and every stain is different. With over 40 years of experience, we’ve learned that a tailored approach is the only way to achieve the safest and most effective results.
Red wine, coffee, pet accidents and everyday spills all behave differently depending on the fibre type. Wool carpets, for example, are highly absorbent and sensitive to the wrong cleaning products, while synthetic carpets react differently to moisture and pH levels. Using the wrong method can easily set a stain or damage the carpet.
This is where expert knowledge matters. Our team understands how fibres, dyes and cleaning agents interact, and we use professional, fibre-safe treatments chosen specifically for your carpet’s needs. Before any cleaning, we assess, test and carefully select the right approach to protect both the stain area and the surrounding pile.
It’s this depth of experience, built over four decades, that has made Devine Carpet Care a trusted name across Sydney and the Northern Beaches.
Our family-owned team takes pride in meticulous, respectful workmanship and treating every home with genuine care.
